E3 2005: Level Up
The PS2 Has Soul
Product: Soul Calibur 3
Company: Namco

Avaliable On:

Fresh off the success of the multi-platform Soul Calibur 2, the series puts up one more with the creation of the third game in this stunning combat series. In Soul Calibur 3, Nightmare has been revived, and the battle between the Soul Calibur and the Soul Edge continues. This time, there are three new characters that join the fray: Zasalamel, Tira, and Setsuka. Returning in Soul Calibur 3 are all your old favorites from the previous two games (excluding the special characters in 2, of course).

As in the previous versions of the game, you can pick your character for Story mode and play out their fate in the Tales of Souls mode. There is also a standard Vs. mode in which you can play against your friends. Using the Character Creation mode, you can even make your own original character and compete in the game. You can choose everything about your custom character, from the character?s sex, to occupation, look, and even the weapon used by the character.

There are many stages added in this version of Soul Calibur, from a German Castle to a Greek shrine, and the top of a clock tower. Including the new characters, Soul Calibur 3 has a cast of over 25 selectable characters for you to play.

The visuals on this game were just stunning from the parts of the game that I saw. I would say that they are much better than the previous games on the PS2. The fights are, as always, very smooth and very fast.

Unfortunately, there were only two selectable characters on the demo version at E3, but I didn?t hear anyone complaining. All told, there were around 20 people sitting around playing with the game (Namco generously had several kiosks there to play on), and many people were engaged in some heated versus battles.

As long as they keep the gameplay formula similar to the previous incarnations of the game, SC fans and non-fans alike are sure to flock to Soul Calibur 3 when it debuts on the Playstation 2 this fall.
